Reformed at RAF Gaydon,in January 1955, 138 became the first Squadron to receive the Vickers Valiant, under the command of Wing Commander Rupert G.W. Oakley DSO, DFC, AFC, DFM.
On July 6th it moved to RAF Wittering with WP213, WP215 and WP220. By the 2nd of January 1956 the Valiants on strength were: WP206, WP211, WP212, WP213,WP215, WP220, WZ363 and WZ384 and the Squadron took its’ aircraft to Malta during the Suez landings.
Earlier, two aircraft, WP206 andWP207, went on Overseas Proving Trials under Operation ‘Too Right’ and on 5th May 1956 an exercise called ‘Rejuvenate’ used four aircraft, WP213, WZ363, WZ384 and WZ389, to test the defences of the northwest UK areas. On the 13th of August 1956 W/Cdr Oakley became the first pilot to land a Valiant in Malta

After the conclusion of the 1958 Strategic Air Command (SAC) Bombing Competition, the competing Crews of the RAF Bomber Command, were given a Congratulatory Dinner by Vickers at Weybridge. The ashtray, depicted above, was given to Squadron Leader Peter J. Clifton, in recognition of his participation.
