I was called up for National Service in August 1956 and, after ‘Square Bashing’ and Trade Training, was posted to RAF Wittering in January 1957. In March of that year I was transferred to 138 Squadron, ‘A’ flight, as an Air Wireless Mechanic. Life was so enjoyable on the Squadron, that in September ‘57 I signed on for a twelve year term.
After many pleasant episodes, including carving the ‘Cat’s Arse’ in Malta, I was posted to RAF Gutersloh in October ‘59. After 18 months at Gutersloh, the airfield was closed for runway maintenance and refurbishment. As a result of this, I was posted to RAF Wildenrath for the remainder of my tour.
Upon returning to ‘Blighty’ I was posted to 18 Squadron at RAF Finningley and remained there until my premature discharge in 1964.
In August, 1997, I returned to this country, after spending 23 years in the United States. In 2001 I purchased a used computer and decided to see if I could find any of my former pals from those happy days in the RAF.
This web-site has emerged from these efforts and, to date, I’m in touch with over seventy former colleagues
